Measure
Enter average wall width and height, then the number of similarly sized walls. Complex cabins should be divided into separate wall groups and added together.

A better project estimate
The calculator starts with wall area, subtracts an average allowance for windows and doors, adjusts for curved log profiles, multiplies by the selected coats and adds a 10% planning buffer. It then converts the estimate into practical 5-gallon and 1-gallon quantities.
Enter average wall width and height, then the number of similarly sized walls. Complex cabins should be divided into separate wall groups and added together.
Use two color coats plus Advance Clear for UV Guard; two stain coats for UV Guard II; and one or two coats for SuSTAIN or Deck & Fence.
Porous, weathered, rough-sawn or newly blasted wood can consume more material. Send us photos and measurements if you want the estimate reviewed.
The calculator uses product-specific midpoint rates from the current Weatherall technical data sheets and calculates first and subsequent coats separately. Actual coverage changes with wood porosity, texture, preparation, application method and weather conditions.
Rounded and D-log profiles have more surface area than a flat wall with the same width and height. The profile adjustment helps reduce the risk of underestimating material.
The calculator subtracts an average of 15 square feet for each opening. Large garage doors, extensive glass or unusually sized openings should be measured separately for a more accurate estimate.
The result already includes a 10% planning buffer for normal waste, absorption differences and touch-ups. Highly porous or heavily restored wood may require an additional allowance.
Yes. Send Nick your dimensions, log profile, planned product and a few cabin photos. Project guidance is free and there is no obligation.
Weatherall quantity planning
Estimating stain for a log home is different from measuring ordinary flat siding. Log shape adds surface area, doors and windows reduce it, and rough or weathered wood can absorb more finish than smooth, properly prepared wood. The LCMC Weatherall stain calculator combines those project details with product-specific first-coat and additional-coat coverage rates to give you a practical starting estimate.
The result includes a 10% material allowance, but it is still an estimate. Wood species, porosity, age, preparation, application method and the amount of product absorbed by the surface can change actual coverage.
Enter the average wall width and height, then select the number of walls. The calculator subtracts an allowance for the windows and doors you enter. For cabins with large gables, additions or walls of very different sizes, calculate those areas separately and combine the quantities.
Flat or square logs have less exposed surface than D-logs, half-round logs or fully rounded profiles. Selecting the closest profile helps account for the extra curvature that a simple length-by-height measurement misses.
Every finish does not cover at the same rate. The calculator uses separate manufacturer coverage midpoints for the selected Weatherall product and treats the first coat differently from additional coats.
Choose the correct coating system
Select the product you actually plan to apply. Switching products after calculating can change both the number of coats and the estimated gallons required.
UV Guard is an exterior log-home system using two color coats followed by UV Guard Advance Clear as the protective final topcoat. Calculate the color coats with UV Guard selected, then calculate the clear coat separately with Advance Clear selected.
UV Guard II is a true two-coat exterior stain system. UV Guard Advance Clear can be added as an optional topcoat for additional protection and should be estimated separately when included in the project.
SuSTAIN is a penetrating oil finish with soap-and-water cleanup. It may be used as a one- or two-coat system depending on the project, wood condition and desired result. Select the coat count you intend to apply.
Weatherall Deck & Fence Finish can be estimated for one or two coats. UV Guard Advance Clear and Log Guard Interior ClearCoat have their own coverage selections, so do not use a stain estimate as a substitute for a clear-coat estimate.
Before ordering
Inspect the wood and confirm the coating system before purchasing. Bare, rough-sawn or heavily weathered logs usually absorb more material than smooth wood or subsequent coats. If an older finish remains, compatibility and preparation matter as much as quantity.

Calculator questions
The first coat is applied to more absorbent wood and generally uses more material. After the surface has received a coat, an additional coat typically spreads farther. That is why this calculator uses separate first-coat and subsequent-coat rates instead of multiplying one universal rate.
No. Clear finish is a separate product with its own coverage. Estimate the UV Guard or UV Guard II color coats first, then run another calculation with UV Guard Advance Clear selected if your chosen system includes it.
Yes. The calculator adds a 10% material allowance and rounds the result up to whole gallons. Complex architecture, very porous wood or spray application may require a different allowance.
Yes, as a planning estimate. Select the nearest surface profile and the correct Weatherall product. For horizontal surfaces or unusually shaped projects, calculate sections separately and contact LCMC if you want help reviewing the result.
